 To: Our Baldwin County Commissioners

       & fellow citizens

Dear Friends,

Friends of Baldwin, including our steering committee and coalition of more than five thousand members, recommend to the Baldwin County Commission that it move forward in asking the Attorney General of Alabama whether it is proper to implement zoning in the flood-prone areas of our county using the quarter/quarter section method recommended by the Baldwin County Planning Department.

Friends of Baldwin recognize the tremendous benefit to our county by zoning these sensitive areas and see a need to accomplish this goal in a timely manner.  First, by zoning flood-prone areas the county will be saving lives and property in the event we suffer a natural disaster such as Katrina or Ivan again in the near future.  Secondly, by zoning these areas we preserve and protect one of the greatest assets Baldwin County has been blessed with.  Our bays, rivers and streams will be saved from over development and passed on for the next generation to enjoy.
In addition, we would like to point out that while we are in favor of zoning flood-prone areas in the near future; the step of asking for an Attorney General’s opinion will simply clarify whether the quarter/quarter section method is the best path.  It will not implement zoning.

Remember also, that all areas within the quarter/quarter section boundary are not required to be zoned alike.  In fact, many areas that are higher in elevation may need only slight modification by zoning, while low-lying areas naturally will be further protected.

Again, Friends of Baldwin recommend that you take action at the next scheduled commission meeting, January 15, 2008, by asking Alabama’s Attorney General whether we are on the correct path.  Thank you for taking this step to protect the people and environment of Baldwin County.
Sincerely,
Friends of Baldwin
